Swan and Canning Rivers
TIME FOR ACTION
Many local people are concerned about the gradual deterioration of the Swan and Canning Rivers over the past decades.
The water is more polluted than it used to be and algal blooms are more common. Parts of the river are often closed off, either because of toxic waterways or crumbling infrastructure. People are no longer choosing to swim in the river as they did in years gone by.
The Federal Government’s response since being elected has been disappointing. They have cut funding available to local environmental conservation groups and have ignored important local infrastructure projects.
I was particularly disappointed when the Government recently decided in the budget to allocate no money to a much-needed $85m local council proposal to upgrade Swan River Wall Infrastructure.
Whilst the Labor Party is spending public money at an alarming rate across the country, chalking up a record debt of $188bn, relatively inexpensive projects in our local area are being ignored. As the West Australian noted the day after the budget, the State has been ‘robbed’ of its share.
$85M FOR RIVER WALL INFRASTRUCTURE A GOOD START
We must act now to ensure that our children and our grandchildren can enjoy the beauty of the Swan River.
I have started a campaign for the Government to fund the $85m infrastructure project. It would be a good start towards a bigger clean-up effort that is essential.
Your help is needed. If you are willing to support the campaign I ask that you click here to download the form, fill it in and return it to me. We must keep the pressure up to secure this important service for the local community.
At the same time I would like to find out what you think would be the best way to safeguard the future of the Swan River. Have your say in the space provided on the back and we can move forward as a community.
