Following the successful Lathlain Primary School and Orrong Road road safety campaigns, I have been pushing for safety improvements to the Cohn/Harris Street intersection in Carlisle.
Local residents describe the intersection as a black spot, saying serious incidents, accidents and ‘near misses’ are happening on a regular basis. The main problem seems to be cars not stopping at the designated ‘Stop signs’ on Harris Street and driving straight over Cohn Street.
I was concerned to see photo evidence of an accident where the police, fire and ambulance emergency services were called to the crash scene.
To assess the extent of the problem and explore possible solutions, I distributed surveys in the area with the assistance of members of the community. Residents have responded in high numbers to express their concern and the majority support a roundabout to improve safety at the intersection.
I subsequently organised an on-site meeting with residents, the council and council engineers to discuss the issue. At the meeting CEO Mr Kyron said the council would start planning some contingencies for road safety improvements that might include a roundabout or median islands.
With young families in the area, it is important that this intersection is made safer and I will continue this campaign for road safety improvements at the intersection.
