The new Burswood Stadium will transform the surrounding suburbs, provide major benefits to all sections of the community and pave the way for the West Coast Eagles to move to Lathlain, according to Steve Irons MP, Federal Member for Swan.
The announcement, which was made today at Burswood Park Golf Course by Premier Colin Barnett, will see a world class stadium built on the peninsula over the coming years.
Mr Irons, who has been a long-time supporter of a Burswood Stadium, said that the decision would be boon for small businesses and residents across the region.
“Public transport will be improved, small businesses will flourish and it will cement property values in the area.
“The benefits will be shared across the community.
“The community wanted this stadium. I would like to thank the Premier for giving this opportunity to the community”.
Mr Irons said he would now be focusing his efforts on working with the West Coast Eagles towards the relocation of some of their football departments to Lathlain.
“I have been working for some time with West Coast Eagles CEO Trevor Nisbett regarding the possibility of the club transferring some of their departments to Lathlain Oval in the event Burswood was selected.
“Now that this has come to fruition I will continue my efforts.
“As the Director of Junior Development for Perth Football Club I believe this would be fantastic for local sport.
“Facilities would be upgraded, Lathlain Oval would become a centre for junior sport in the district and locals would be able to watch their heroes train” he added.
Mr Irons also paid tribute to the work of South Perth MLA John McGrath who also played an important role in the stadium decision.
