Residents from across the electorate of Swan are calling for action to address a plague of mosquitoes swarming around Perth’s riverine and estuarine fringes.

Hot weather, unusually high tides and a shortage of baits are said to have contributed to this year’s unusually high numbers, causing anguish for local people.

Member for Swan Steve Irons called for local councils to join together to tackle the problem.

“Local councils have reported a shortage of baits due to the high demand this year caused by the flooding over east. They have also reported a reluctance of the Swan River Trust to fog” he said.

“The Swan electorate is surrounded by water on 3 sides and many people have contacted my office to say they have been affected.

“One lady in Riverton believes this year’s outbreak to be the worst in the 26 years she has lived in the suburb.

“Other areas particularly affected include Lynwood, Waterford, Belmont, Ferndale and Ascot.

“As with any plague, there are associated health risks and the problem needs to be addressed soon. Some residents have described the problem as unbearable.

“I am happy to support the councils if they decide to make a joint submission to the Swan River Trust” he added.

Mr Irons said constituent and Former Member of Parliament Wilson Tuckey, who lives in Belmont, had also contacted him to report the problem.
